Floor Books

What are Floor Books?

Floor books are a living record of learning, capturing the rich experiences, collaboration and thinking that take place within the classroom every day.

They make learning visible by documenting the process of learning as it happens through photographs, pupil voice, annotations, discussion, questioning and shared outcomes.

Floor books evidence far more than written work alone; they celebrate the incidental and powerful learning that takes place through talk, teamwork, exploration, creativity and project-based experiences.

As working documents, floor books enable children to contribute meaningfully to a shared record of learning where every child’s ideas, thoughts and achievements are valued and respected.

Floor books support our spiral curriculum by helping children revisit prior learning, strengthen connections across subjects and build long-term knowledge and understanding over time.

They provide valuable opportunities for reflection, critical thinking and enquiry, capturing children’s questions, discussions and evolving understanding throughout the learning journey.

Floor books are an important tool for assessment, allowing teachers to identify what children know, understand and can do, while informing next steps and responsive teaching.

Through floor books, children can see their own progress from their starting points, developing confidence, independence and pride in their learning journey.

Floor books showcase collaborative learning at its very best, evidencing how children work together to solve problems, share ideas and contribute collectively towards meaningful outcomes.

They provide parents and carers with a genuine insight into daily classroom life, demonstrating how adults and children work together in creative, reflective and engaging ways to help every child flourish.

We will also be compiling folders containing samples of what is in the floor books for each year group (like what Someries Website has in theirs). We would like these to be added to the Floor Books page as flipbooks for each year group once you received them.
